CHAPTER FOURTEEN

“I’m doing my best, Jon,” Damien said. “You two are getting free room and board here, and I’m paying you to work the haunt, even though we don’t need the extra help, and despite the fact it’s hurting our budget. We’re not a charity, but I’m doing what I can to help you.”

“I know, I know, but this isn’t sustainable,” Jon answered, sounding piqued.

I began creeping backward as quietly as I could. The last thing I wanted was to be caught eavesdropping. What Jon had said made sense: the sooner the murder was wrapped up, the sooner he and Allie would be allowed to leave Nightmare and get back on tour. Without money from playing shows, they would be in danger of going broke.

Boy, could I relate to that. As someone who had so recently been broke, too, I understood Jon’s sense of urgency.

I was slightly annoyed with both Jon’s and Damien’s ends of the conversation. While I admired Damien for giving Jon and Allie work, he was taking the martyr route, making it sound like the Sanctuary was going to suffer financially because of it. At the same time, Jon didn’t sound all that grateful for the money.

The thing that seemed even more important than the battle of the attitudes, though, was Jon’s mention that Allie needed to “properly” feed. What did that even mean? If I asked either Jon or Damien about it, they would know their conversation had been overheard.

Luckily, as soon as I emerged from the hallway into the entryway, I saw Mori and Theo talking together. Felipe was running circles around them.

“Just the two vampires I wanted to see,” I said.

“Because you miss my handsome face?” Theo asked.

“No, though you do look a lot more attractive without the zombie makeup.” I stepped close to the two of them, threw a glance around the room to make sure we were alone, and said, “Are there vampires who have special diets? Like, can a vampire be allergic to Type O Positive, or something?”

Mori and Theo looked at each other, then they both shook their heads. “Not that I’ve ever heard of,” Mori said.

“Everyone’s blood tastes a little different, of course,” said Theo. “I used to know a vampire who preferred drinking from people leaving a tavern in the wee hours of the morning. She swore she got a buzz from the alcohol in their system. But I’ve never heard of a vampire who had dietary restrictions.”

“Huh. I wonder what my blood tastes like?”

I had meant the question more for myself, but Theo looked at me slyly. “I’ll be happy to tell you.”

“Yuck. No! I’m not a snack!”

“Speaking of snacks,” Mori said, “Felipe and I are going out so I can get a bite. We’ll return to your apartment late, but we promise to be quiet.”

I assured Mori that was no problem, and I even wished her luck. I knew she would be looking for a tourist she could mesmerize, which meant she could send them on their way after she drank their blood, and they would have no memory of the event.
